I was born and raised in Longview. I had a wonderful public education at Northlake, Monticello, and finally, R.A. Long. I owe so much to my teachers and coaches from throughout that time.
I was inspired by my High School history teacher—I loved the classes-- and pursued a degree in History (which I think is good background for just about any field)
My coaches were so good. They were so good, that myself and several other classmates still own records in track & field from 1980 and ’81. My senior year, my team won the girls state basketball championship. I attended college at Stanford University where I was also a varsity athlete.
I started my career as a history teacher and everything that followed always had an element of teaching, whether it was in the classroom or sharing information on subjects about which I cared.
Over the years, I worked for decades in the non-profit sector, started a company, and taught courses at UCLA, New York University, and the University of Miami. I earned my Masters in Public Administration (with a focus on Public Policy) and used that degree to advise cities and counties across the county.
I moved back to Longview in 2022. My Mom, Ann, needed full-time caregiving during her last months. As the only girl and youngest in the family, the role fell to me; it was the best thing I’ve ever done. We had 8 good months together and I wouldn’t trade that for the world. She finally felt like she was “home” again in the house we shared.
I am thrilled to be back home again.
After my mom died, I spent a year saying yes to virtually everything; I was motivated to be of service. I said yes to Rotary (and yes again this year to being 2nd in line to the presidency), I said yes to joining the 23-club, as an officer. I completed the Master Gardener program through WSU extension (and we do a LOT volunteering), and I was also appointed to the Longview Planning Commission.
I considered running for Cowlitz County Commissioner for quite a while. Some people advised me to run as an Independent, as they believe---as a Democrat, I cannot win….I have been a Democrat since my 20s (Even though I was raised by Republicans, whom I loved very much) I did not feel comfortable changing my party just to “maybe” win an election.
The thing is, that doesn’t mean that I can’t or won’t listen to all perspectives and work with others to be a commissioner for everyone. That’s up to me and I will make government work for everyone.
